The Japanese katana sword is widely considered to be the world's first and finest samurai sword; it was also one of the first mass-produced, hand-forged, long, and double-edged swords. It has been admired for its elegant simplicity and beauty as well as having versatile cutting ability. This sword was not intended to be worn on the belt but rather used unencumbered. The samurai sword is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, slender, single-edged blade mounted into a plain or decorated hilt.
